Das Symposium wird organisiert von toucouleur e.v (Afrikamera) in Kooperation mit dem COMENGA-Programm der Stiftung Partnerschaft mit Afrika e.v. mit finanzieller Unterstützung des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung und der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung.

Das aktuelle Kino aus Afrika erlebt in den letzten Jahren einen Aufschwung. Filmfestivals spielen im Zusammenhang mit der Produktion und Distribution dieser neuen Filme eine immer größere Rolle. Sie sind Sprungbretter für die „Post Independence Generation“ junger afrikanischer Filmemacher, Plattformen des Austausches und Geburtsorte neuer Projektideen. Im letzten Jahrzehnt wurden zunehmend mehr Festivals und Filmschulen gegründet. Sie schaffen jungen afrikanischen Filmemachern eine Plattform  eigene Visionen vom afrikanischen Kino zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. In diesem Zusammenhang gewinnen strategische Partnerschaften zwischen Filmschaffenden in den afrikanischen Ländern und in Deutschland sowie anderen europäischen Staaten eine immer größere Bedeutung.

Im Zuge des Symposiums sollen mögliche neue Modelle und Wege der partnerschaftlichen Kooperation zwischen Filmakteuren in Deutschland und Afrika diskutiert und erarbeitet werden. Was können Festivalnetzwerke leisten, um die Sichtbarkeit des aktuellen afrikanischen Kinos auf dem Kontinent selbst und in Deutschland / Europa zu stärken? Wie können Barrieren zwischen französischen und englischen Netzwerken überwunden und deutsche Filmfestivals eingebunden werden? Wie muss die Zusammenarbeit gestaltet sein, damit beide Seiten davon profitieren? Und was ist notwendig, um die Verknüpfung zwischen deutschen und afrikanischen Filmschulen zu verbessern, das professionelle Know-How afrikanischer Filmschaffender zu stärken und neue Talente zu fördern? Dabei gilt besondere Aufmerksamkeit der Frage, welche Rolle zivilgesellschaftlichen Initiativen in diesem Zusammenhang zukommt: Wie können diese unterstützen und welche konkreten Kooperationsmodule sind denkbar? Wie kann über das Medium Film neues Engagement für deutsch-afrikanische Partnerschaften generiert werden?

Eingeladen sind Akteure aus Kultur, Politik, Medien und Zivilgesellschaft, die sich mit den Entwicklungen auf dem afrikanischen Kontingent befassen und diese unterstützen: Kulturschaffende, Journalisten und Mitglieder von NGOs, genauso wie Vertreter der beteiligten Filmschulen und Filmfestivals.

Keynotes  / Workshop Hosts:

Claire Diao studierte Filmwissenschaft in Lyon und London. Sie arbeitete zunächst als Koordinatorin für ein französisches Filmemacherkollektiv und dann als freie Journalistin, spezialisiert auf afrikanisches Kino und aus französischen Banlieus stammenden Filmemachern. Claire Diao berichtet in verschiedenen frankophonen Zeitungen und Onlineportalen über internationale Filmfestivals, sie unterhält zudem den Blog L’Afrique en Films. Seit 2013 kuratiert sie „Quartiers Lointains“, ein französisch-afrikanisches Kurzfilmprogramm. Bei AFRIKAMERA präsentiert sie Filme und moderiert
Panels und Q&A.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schneider ist Direktor des Instituts für Kulturpolitik der Universität Hildesheim und Inhaber des UNESCO-Lehrstuhls „Cultural Policy for the Arts in Development“ (Kulturpolitik für die Künste innerhalb gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungsprozesse).

Peter Rorvik (Südafrika) ist Generalsekretär des Arterial Networks, einem zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerk, bestehend aus Künstlern, Aktivisten und NGOs, das 2007 zur Stärkung des Kultur- und Kreativsektors in den afrikanischen Ländern gegründet wurde. Als Direktor des südafrikanischen Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) leitete er von 1999 – 2012 unter anderem das Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) und initiierte dort in Zusammenarbeit mit der Berlinale den Talent Campus Durban.

Mohamed Saïd Ouma ist künstlerischer Leiter des Comoros International Film Festival (CIFF) sowie seit 2004 Co-Organisator des International African Film Festival of Africa and the Islands (FIFAI) in Réunion Island. Er arbeitet zudem als Journalist und Dokumentarfilmer (u.a. Le mythe de la cinquième île, 2007).

Der Politikwissenschaftler Eric Van Grasdorff arbeitet in der Kommunikationsabteilung der südafrikanischen Botschaft in Berlin und ist Vorsitzender der deutschen Sektion von AfricAvenir International e.V. (www.africavenir.org). Seit mehr als 10 Jahren organisiert er eine monatliche Filmreihe, in deren Rahmen eine systematische Auseinandersetzung mit dem filmischen Schaffen in Afrika stattfindet.[:en]

Current African cinema has been booming in recent years. Film festivals in connection with producers and distributors of these new pictures play a steadily increasing role. They are stepping stones for the “Post Independence Generation”  of young, African film makers, platforms for exchange and birth places for new project ideas. The last decade has seen a surge in the establishment of new festivals and film schools. They provide young, African film makers a platform where they can develop and implement their own visions for African cinema. In this context are strategic partnerships between film makers in the African countries and Germany, along with other European states, of growing importance.

As part of the symposium possible new models and routes for the partnership cooperation between people engaged in film production in Germany and Africa should be discussed and worked out. How can festival networks contribute to the enhancement of the visibility of current, African cinema on the continent itself and in Germany / Europe? How can barriers between French and English networks be overcome, and German festivals become connected? How must the cooperation be designed so that both sides profit? And what is necessary in order to improve the connection between German and African film schools, to strengthen the professional know how of African film makers and promote new talent? Here it is important to stress the question of which role civil society initiatives are given in this context: How can these support and which concrete cooperation modules are conceivable? How can the film media be instrumental in generating new commitment in the German-African partnership?

Invited are people from the cultural sector, politics, media and civil society, who deal with the developments on the African continent and support them: creative people, journalists and NGO members, as well as representatives from the participating film schools and film festivals.

Keynotes  / Workshop hosts:

Claire Diao studied film studies in Lyon and London. She worked as a coordinator for a French filmmaker’s collective then became an independent journalist specialized in African cinemas and filmmakers emerging from French suburbs. Covering international film festivals, she contributes to various Francophone newspapers and online publications and runs the blog L’Afrique en Films. Since 2013, she curates „Quartiers Lointains“, a short-film program between France and Africa. At AFRIKAMERA, she presents screenings and moderates panels and Q&A.

Peter Rorvik (South Africa) is  Secretary-General of the Arterial Network, a civil society network, comprising of artists, activists and NGO, founded in 2007 to strengthen the cultural and creative sector in the African countries.  As director of South African Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) from 1999 to 2012 Rorvik among others headed the  Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) and initiated there the Talent Campus Durban in cooperation with the Berlinale.

Political schientist Eric Van Grasdorff works at the communications department of the South African embassy in Berlin and chairs the German section of AfricAvenir International e.V. (www.africavenir.org). He has for more than ten years organized a monthly film series, in which framework a systematic scrutinization of cinematic production in Africa takes place.[:]
